| introduction | croton oil is a toxic viscous liquid obtained from the seeds of a small tree (Euphorbiaceae [Euphorbiaceae] Croton tiglium) produced in Asia. Croton is wild or cultivated in India and Indonesia. Croton oil is light yellow to brown, transparent, has a long-lasting spicy taste and unpleasant smell, is highly toxic and strongly irritating. It used to be used as a laxative, anti-irritant and veterinary medicine, but now it is considered too dangerous for medicinal use. The use of croton oil as a drug obviously originated in China and was introduced to the West by the Dutch in the 16th century. |
